THE LAND OF POLLINO RED WINE
The territory of such powerful wine is a pure panorama of vertical mountains, a landscape where there is a perfect alternation of rainfall and insolation. The combination of mountains and coastline around Pollino is a vital component in the local terroir, while the Mediterranean sea helps to moderate the intense heat of the south Italian summer, so that justly the name “Il Mezzogiorno”, of the entire group of regions including Calabria, means ‘The Midday’.
The plants of Pollino DOC, therefore, live in one of Calabria’s most northerly wine-growing zone, and also one of the highest, located as it is below the 7430ft (2265m) Pollino Massif.
The area surrouding the National Pollino Park is literaly covered by large vineyard areas, spreading outwards and down to the south of this highest point, specifically into the Raganello and Garga valleys.
The Pollino DOC was originally introduced in such area in April 1975, afterwards it maintained DOC protection after a long struggle to receive a clear wine appellation. Now, Pollino is sub-region of the Terre di Cosenza DOC, since 2011 along with its neighbors Donnici, San Vito di Luzzi and Verbicaro.
A PERFECT CLIMATE
The hot of Italy’s southern is here only a half, due to persistent breezes which with their alternance of heating and cooling, make the land even a little bit cold. Over the course of a summer the windy day causes morning and afternoon refreshment of the vineyards, which minimizes the risk of fungal vine diseases, typical of humid climates, and further improves the quality of viticulture.
According to the geography, the special position of the vineyards, at the foot of higher Mount Pollino, has been exalting the Wines, enabling them to intensify the strong flavours, typical of the regional traditional cuisine, Mediterranean and Calabrian, so that this wine easily caresses the palates of the most refined and demanding gourmets.
Nowadays and in few years, the wonderful people of Pollino national park improved their natural vocation to the planting of vines species of excellent quality, and they produce, effectively, a master red wine like Pollino DOC.
This red wine is fully capable to meet the needs and the expectations of those looking in a authentic Mediterraenan wine, plus reliability, personality and great quality.
